Heidi,

Thanks so much for your oh-so-encouraging words at the Igniting Innovation Summit. You really lit a fire for me to do what I love and just be free. It's such a simple concept, but we all get sucked into our socialized world, that I abandon that sometimes.

You are awesome!

Thank you a ton,

Susie

PS: Would love to see the next new thing you do to your hair :)

This is amazing!!! I have been exploring this exact same question over the past 6 months for a documentary I am working on. I love the responses you got and am curious about what you do and how you plan to take this further. Here is a link to a short trailer for the film I am working on. I would be very happy to connect and share with you on this topic

Thank you for sharing this Heidi. This sums up my experience in Bangladesh and Cambodia as well. The resilency of the human spirit is remarkable, especially considering what both these places have been through and continue to deal with. The beautiful people of these countries have taught me that while in many cases they are financially poor, the richness of their spirit is a wealth that cannot be taken away.

Hi Heidi,

Good post!

Re: social enterprise in general, it's my perspective that ALL businesses are social enterprises. However, some have a positive social impact, and some have a negative social impact. Those w/ a negative impact have it for 2 reasons: They don't know, or they don't care.

I'm glad that those that don't know have orgs like IDE (Now w/ Andrew R.!) to help educate them.

Those that don't care need the light shined on them and to be called out for what they're doing wrong. Where appropriate, the rules need to be changed to insure their 'rightness' so that they don't damage others in their pursuit of success.

Re: those rules, most systems of command and control are organized around the needs of the few. It's good to see orgs like IDE creating a framework that's not into either command or control that's focused on helping people help themselves - and thus the needs of the many wherever they are.

Keep up the GREAT work!

Best,
Kevin

Angela, Thanks for posting! I'm actually talking about people anywhere, in any country, who need opportunities. I definitely have a bit of a slant for the developing world because that's where the poorest people are, and where IDE works. In this country we have many more options than in the developing world, but we definitely still need help here. That's why I'm always active in elections, volunteering, etc, but what I don't want to engage in anymore is the nasty politics. Also, the rise of social enterprise includes US based companies helping people here as well. To that end, I'm supporting and promoting the launch of a new platform that matches social ventures to investors and advisors called w1sd0m. w1sd0m will help social businesses in the US and abroad.

Hi Heidi, I definitely agree with the sentiment that we need to help people who are unable to help themselves, and see potential in people in unfortunate circumstances. But there are plenty of folks in the U.S. that need help too. We shouldn't forget about them.
